Everyone uses the kitchen because we all need to eat for nourishment. With high volume usage, you can expect the same for your garbage disposal system. However, with frequent use comes wear and tear. And it’s very annoying when it gets jammed. Find out what you can do when this happens.

Common Reasons for a Jammed Disposal System

When your disposal system hums and creates noise that it normally doesn’t emit, you can assume you’ve got a jam. You need to know the most common reasons for this to avoid them. Here are the common jam culprits:

  • Coffee grounds: Even if they’re already grounded, coffee grounds don’t belong in your sink drain. They perk you up but damage your machine because they will wear down the blades faster.

  • Seeds: An orange seed or an avocado pit could have fallen inside. This is a problem because seeds can grow in a wet environment. They can take root and grow, which jams your machine. Make sure you stay vigilant in preventing seeds from getting in there.

  • Eggshells: The white parts are hard and make the blades dull. Moreover, the sticky membrane inside coats the blades, too. Worst of all, it creates a terrible stench. Avoid this at all costs.

  • Grease: Oily things can harden so it jams your drain. Besides, it is hard to clean out the grease. If your disposal sounds weird but you don’t see any objects inside, the grease could be the culprit.

Safely Fix a Jammed Disposal System

Try to do a hard reset of the machine when you don’t see visible objects. At times, the jam could be due to overuse and overheating so the machine itself shuts down. Press the reset button under the sink. If this doesn’t work or if you spot visible obstructions, follow these tips:

1. Cut power: Turn the machine off and cut the circuit breaker to avoid any major accidents. Disposal system blades are akin to multiple knives so it’s best to be safe than sorry.

2. Use tongs: For best results, use long and thin tongs to fish out any objects. Avoid using your fingers to prevent nasty cuts. You may have to try several times with the tongs to feel for debris.

Seek Plumbing Assistance

If you cannot unjam the machine, resist the urge to stick your hands in there. Instead, call a reliable plumber because it’s easy for them to fix your disposal system. They can take it apart from under the sink. Don’t put yourself at risk!
