As a pet owner, you don’t want your beloved fur baby to catch fleas. These yucky parasites not only bite your furry friends, but they can also bite you. Though they are not as painful as wasp or bee stings, it still hurts to get bitten. You will experience swelling and itchiness in the area. Most of all, you must be wary as they carry diseases like typhus and plague.

Unfortunately, fleas can readily target you as they are known to jump great heights more than any other insect. If you have these pesky critters around your home, establishing flea control measures is a top priority. Luckily, you will find many DIY flea remedies to prevent and kill fleas.

Dish Soap Solution

Create this flea trap by mixing warm water with dish soap. After, place the solution on a plate and place it in all the areas which get the most flea activity. This acts as a glue that traps the fleas due to high viscosity. Repeat this method with a fresh solution daily. For best results, do it at night as these bugs are nocturnal. You can also use a LED candle near the mixture to attract the fleas.

Make a Non-Toxic Spray

Make your own non-toxic spray that’s safe for pets and children. You just need to mix the following in a spray bottle:

  • 4 liters vinegar

  • 2 liters water

  • 500ml lemon juice

  • 250ml witch hazel

Before spraying this all over your home, you must vacuum first. Don’t forget to wash bedding, throw pillows, or area rugs that may be flea-infested.

Sprinkle with Baking Soda

Sprinkle baking soda in your carpets and furniture. You can even use a brush to rub it into the fabric. After, you must vacuum the area thoroughly. Vacuuming actually gets rid of fleas by removing them from the carpet fibers and furniture materials. But when you add baking soda to the mix, it becomes easier to suction the fleas out.

Utilize Salt

Akin to baking soda, salt also works well in killing fleas. Salt dehydrates them, so they die. Generously douse your carpets and furniture with finely ground salt. Wait for two days so that salt can do its magic, then start vacuuming. Ensure you empty contents in the trash bin outside your house and don’t let it stay for long.

Concoct a Lemon Spray

Professional exterminators say the lemon is a magical ingredient. The acid can effectively kill fleas while leaving your home smelling fresh. You can make your own solution and put it inside a bottle. Then just spray this to the infected areas until damp. There’s no need to leave them soaking wet. The procedure for the citrus spray is:

1. Slice one lemon thinly

2. Prepare one pint of water

3. Mix both ingredients and boil

4. Let the solution sit overnight

5. Pour into a bottle for spraying

Plant Flea Repelling Flora

Finally, you can keep plants that naturally repel fleas around your home with pots and your garden. Pay close attention to entryways, too. You can try the following:

  • Chrysanthemums

  • Penny Royal

  • Spearmint

  • Lavender

As an alternative, if you don’t have a green thumb, try diffusing herbal essential oils or lighting up candles. If all else fails, call a professional pest control company to take the nasty fleas out.
